Construction in Hong Kong soars by 34%

Hong Kong’s main building contractors carried out 33.6% more work in the second quarter of this year than in the same period in 2011, according to figures from the Census & Statistics Department.

The year-on-year rise resulted in a value of HK$39.2bn (£3.1bn) in the quarter, and after discounting the effect of price changes, the total gross value of construction works main contractors performed increased 26% in real terms year-on-year.

Residential building projects accounted for the largest share of the construction, up 55% in the past 12 months to a gross value amount of HK$10bn. However, the largest increase in spending on construction was in the transport sector, rising by 71% compared to a year earlier.

One reason for this is the breaking of ground this summer for a new link road from Hong Kong to Macau Bridge. The link road and the new bridge are expected to be completed in Q4 2016.
