BBC Wales site sold to housebuilder

Taylor Wimpey has exchanged contracts with BBC Cymru Wales to purchase its Broadcasting House headquarters in Llantrisant Road, Llandaff, Cardiff, with the intention to build a new housing development on the site.

The deal also includes the Ty Oldfield premises on the opposite side of Llantrisant Road and will be redeveloped into carefully planned development of between 400 and 500 new homes which will be a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments and three, four and five-bedroom houses plus 20% of the homes will be provided as affordable properties.

Gareth Hawke, Land Director for Taylor Wimpey South Wales, said: "We are delighted to be able to announce this significant deal with the BBC, which will help facilitate the broadcaster's move to new, state-of-the-art premises, and in turn, allow us to provide a bespoke new residential community in this highly sought-after area of the capital.

"Our development will combine a mix of private and much-needed affordable homes, car parking and public open space, with the first properties expected to go on sale in early 2019, following the BBC's relocation and subject to the planning process.

"The project will also provide a significant boost to the local economy, creating approximately 100 jobs in construction, and an additional 300 in the supply chain, for the duration of the build, which is expected to take four years."

The development site covers approximately 17.5 acres across the two sites - Broadcasting House on the northern side of Llantrisant Road and Ty Oldfield on the southern side, which currently houses BBC offices and buildings. The Lodge, a listed building on the Ty Oldfield site, will be retained.

Work is expected to start on site in 2018, when the BBC is due to relocate to its new headquarters.
