How SME architects are adjusting to Coronavirus

As the UK went into a lockdown due to Covid-19, with many building sites now closed and developers reviewing their existing pipeline, we spoke to a handful of Trusted Land’s approved member architects to discover what they are doing to help their projects moving amidst the disruption, and what changes they are seeing.

In a recent survey by TrustedLand to their 750 platform members, their CEO, Alex Harrington-Griffin said that over a third of the procurement platforms respondents stated they expect ‘significant’ disruption, which many are working rapidly to navigate.

Barbara Bochnak of architectural practice, ITO Lab, suggested they haven’t seen too much change initially: “So far, clients have not indicated any significant changes in their plans. We reviewed all active and new projects, prioritising delivery and critical deadlines. We are confident, we can reduce the impact on our early stage projects. Our focus is now on the projects which are starting, or are in construction phase.”

 “The long term impact for the industry might not only improve work efficiency, but also inspire an improvement in the way we design spaces.”

Principle of London-based Gunn Associates and former Developers Boardroom committee member, Duncan Gunn, on the other hand, identified come clear initial disruptions: “The Coronavirus pandemic has thrown the industry into an unexpected crisis; one in which some are excelling and others, sadly, are struggling.”
