New data reveals the cities with the most and least amount of empty shops

Property Inspect has analysed property portals Rightmove, Zoopla and Savills to look at the best and worst cities for Christmas shopping.

Looking at 51 cities across the UK, Property Inspect collected data of the cities with the most retail properties to rent, and cities with the least retail properties to rent.

Sheffield boasts the lowest amount of empty retail properties per 100,000 population. In second place is Birmingham, and Liverpool sits comfortably in the third best city for retail options.

However, Kingston upon Hull remains the worst area in the UK for empty shops, while Stoke- on-Trent, Walsall and Plymouth were close behind.

The report stated: ‘More than half of the cities in the study have seen a rise in empty shops since we conducted the study last year, which is staggering when we consider how many shops the UK has to offer country wide. Whilst Christmas is the time of year when business should be thriving as we all treat our loved ones, our data shows the average UK high street has 6.5 empty shops as we enter the Christmas period. It’s now more important than ever that we shop in the high street.’
