Gross mortgage lending by building societies stood at £1.775bn in July, down -43% on the year, according to the Building Societies Association.
In June, gross mortgage lending stood at £1.772bn and the association said it does not expect much improvement for the rest of the year.
On a seasonally adjusted net basis, lending contracted by £585m in July, after falling by £493m in June.
