Major capital transport projects in London are likely to be dropped due to a lack of funding and in favour of pursuing Crossrail and tube improvements, according to Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London.
As a £230m funding package from BAA toward the £16bn Crossrail project was announced this week, Johnson stated that there is not enough ‘cash to do everything we would like’ in terms of major transport projects.
In his ‘Way to Go’ paper, which sets out his vision for transport in the capital, Johnson said ‘one thing we cannot do is spend tens of millions keeping projects alive, for political reasons, when there is simply no government funding to deliver them’. The Crossrail project, which he describes as ‘vital’ to the future of the city, is guaranteed to go ahead.
Crossrail will provide direct services from Heathrow airport through central London, the City and Canary Wharf and out to Shenfield and Abbey Wood. New stations will be created at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel and the Isle of Dogs ( Canary Wharf).
