West Hull regeneration goes before council

A draft Area Action Plan, proposing the £400m regeneration of Newington and St Andrew’s in west Hull, has been submitted to Hull City Council for approval.

Over the next 15 years the plan aims to deliver approximately 2,000 new homes, improvements to 2,600 other residences, the demolition of 1,800 poor quality terraced houses, a new secondary school, investment in community facilities and the revitalisation of local retail areas. If approved by councillors, the plan will have a second six-week public consultation before being presented to the Government in early 2009.

The Newington and St Andrew’s scheme is part of a wider regeneration project in Hull being undertaken by the regeneration agency Gateway. A further £200m is expected to be invested in East Hull. The project is currently in the planning stage but as in the west of the city there will be a focus on creating and improving homes in the area.

David Ward, Yorkshire regional managing director for lead developer Keepmoat Homes, told PIN: “New homes have shown to be a key factor in many successful regeneration schemes. They introduce high quality, energy efficient and attractive homes that enable local residents to remain close to their families, friends and work, while attracting new people to relocate to the area. The benefits have far reaching effects which are felt way beyond the newly constructed homes, helping to revitalise communities, the housing market and the local economy.”
