Ruth Kelly has opted to halt the demolition of 3,000 residential properties in Liverpool, temporarily at least.

The demolition plans for the properties in Anfield, Breckfield, Picton and Edge Hill are part of a housing market renewal pathfinder New Heartlands proposal to regenerate the city, but local opposition has forced the government to reconsider its decision to demolish the homes.

spokesman for the Department of Communities and Local Government said: "There have been some concerns raised, so we want to take a closer look at the applications."
