Hendon Sainsbury’s to be redeveloped into new store and residential towers

Work is to start on St George and Sainsbury’s new development in Hendon shortly. The Silk Park development involves a new Sainsbury’s flagship store, 1,309 homes and local amenities set within a public park.

The new 43,000 sq ft Sainsbury’s flagship store will offer customers a much better shopping experience with added benefits of cycle parking and a large undercover car park. Alongside the new Sainsbury’s store will be 10,000 sq ft of flexible commercial space providing opportunities for cafés, restaurants, office space or a gym.

Piers Clanford, Divisional Managing Director of St George Plc and Chairman of Berkeley St Joseph, said: “We are delighted to work in partnership with Sainsbury’s to deliver this important development for Hendon.

“Silk Park reflects our commitment of investing in communities and creating sustainable neighbourhoods through improved biodiversity and more accessible green spaces, state-of-the-art amenities and much-needed new homes and jobs for local people.”

The 1,309 new homes, of which 35% (by habitable room) are affordable, comprise a selection of tenure-blind one, two and three bedroom apartments and will be delivered in two phases. Phase one comprises the new Sainsbury’s and residential ‘city’ blocks located on a podium level above the new store. Phase two will see three residential buildings including the tallest building at Silk Park, a signature 28-storey tower.

At the heart of the development is a 1.5-acre public park for the local community, with water features and fountains, garden squares, play space and seating. The plans also include improved pedestrian access on Edgware Road with wider footways and tree planting.

Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s Property Director, said: “Our partnership with St George will deliver a flagship supermarket, housing, a new park and green space for residents and visitors to enjoy. We will continue to keep the community updated as we embark on this exciting development.”

Silk Park has a 10 year build programme. Enabling works for the development will commence in October, and involves the creation of new access routes into the store carpark and a new store entrance.
