New accommodation agreed for University of Hull

A £130m on-campus student residence at the University of Hull has been granted planning approval by Hull City Council.

The scheme will expand the student accommodation available at the university and offer a range of single rooms and one bedroom apartments plus a central plaza and thoroughfare will offer facilities to a further 1,462 students.

Amy Jackson, Vice-President Activities at Hull University Union, said: “Students want a great experience when they come to University and their accommodation is a huge part of that. For many students it is the first time they have moved away from home and students spend a long time looking at accommodation before they make a choice. This investment is a real plus for the University of Hull and once it’s finished will be a fantastic addition for students.

“Having high-spec accommodation like this, following on from the opening of the Courtyard, will put the University of Hull up there in terms of student living.”

The University of Hull is working with University Partnerships Programme (UPP) who will raise the required investment and handle the design, construction and operation of the project. The construction value of the project is more than £80m.

The location will provide the perfect base for students to attend lectures and enjoy everything the University has to offer on campus, including the new sports facilities, newly-refurbished Brynmor Jones Library, cinema and new concert venue at Middleton Hall opened for 2017.

Glenn Burgess, Acting Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hull, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive unanimous approval for our exciting plans. Our £130m project will create more high-quality accommodation for our students. The West Campus Residences Project will contribute to the University’s commitment to offering the best student experience and help continue to attract high-calibre students and staff, who bring an exciting range of talent and cultures to the city and enhance the local area. We’re proud to be investing so significantly in making Hull a highly desirable place to live, work, study, visit and invest.”

The project is one of several significant investments at the University, with £16m of new sports facilities, including a new floodlit outdoor pitch, gym, fitness studios and a 12-court sports hall. The Courtyard, a £30m development of accommodation for 562 students on campus; a £28m Health Campus currently under construction; and a £7m refurbishment of dining and conferencing facilities on campus.
