Wakefield retail scheme likely to go ahead

A new shopping development in Wakefield's Snowhill area is set to be approved by the council.

West Register Property Investments intends to build a discount food store, seven shops, a coffee shop, car park and pub at land to the west of the A650 and Redhall Lane.

The development would create 130 jobs. It is on a neighbouring site to where more than 1,000 homes could be built under separate plans. Permission for a new roundabout at the site has already been granted.

A rival bid for a new Lidl supermarket, a frozen food store, restaurant and car park on the east side of the A650 at Snowhill is recommended for refusal however with the report stating technical objections had been raised to the Lidl scheme by highways bosses.

It added: "When balancing the two schemes it is considered that the proposals subject of this application should be refused and the proposals submitted by West Register should be approved."
