The Bull Ring in Kidderminster is to be transformed by TIAA Henderson Real after it received planning consent from Wyre Forest District Council.
The plans involve the demolition of Crown House and the delivery of a major new public square, thus opening up the River Stour providing a setting for markets, fetes and other events, flanked by new restaurants and cafes. The plans include new trees and landscaping, new street furniture, seating and extensive areas of pedestrian priority space.
Martin Perry, Director of Retail Development at TIAA Henderson Real Estate, said: "We are delighted to have achieved planning permission for what will be a very valuable contribution to Kidderminster's town centre. We are committed to progressing the scheme as soon as possible. These plans will breathe new life in to this part of Kidderminster, expanding the boundaries of the town centre and adding a quality new development for residents."
The proposals for Weavers Wharf include a new anchor retail unit of 6,050 sq m GIA (over two floors), 3 restaurants next to the canal, 3 café/retail units overlooking the new square, a new bridge over the Staffordshire and Worcester Canal to provide access to Matalan directly from Weavers Wharf Retail Park.
Marcus Hart, Leader of the Council, Wyre Forest District Council, said: "I am delighted that the district's plans for the regeneration of Kidderminster took a huge step forward last night as plans to demolish Crown House and reconfigure the Bullring as a public square were given planning permission as part of a wider redevelopment of the Western Gateway into the town proposed by our partners TIAA Henderson Real Estate. We are very pleased to be working with the owners of Weavers Wharf on our shared ambition to improve Kidderminster as a quality town centre."
The area will also include a flexible area for short stay parking which will be available for use when markets or events are not being held.
