Retail development plans unveiled

Having completed a £50 million Morrisons supermarket in Sheldon, Birmingham, Chase Midlands Estates Ltd has unveiled plans to build five retail units on the adjacent land.

The scheme will form the second phase of the company's development at the former Severn Trent Water site on the Coventry Road and will comprise five open A1 retail units ranging from 3,500 sq ft to 11,000 sq ft and capable of accommodating mezzanine floors, offering a total of 54,635 sq ft of retail space. The development includes a service yard and 585 car parking spaces shared with the new 106,000 sq ft Morrisons supermarket.

Tim Haslam, a director of Chase Midland Estates Ltd, said: "We envisage that retailers will be attracted by the high footfall that is likely to be generated by the busy commuter route and the new Morrisons supermarket.

"The retail development will enhance and support Sheldon's existing shopping centre by creating a level pedestrian route from the shared shoppers car park to the existing shops."

Construction work on the retail units is due to begin in late 2014 and be completed by summer 2015.
