Glasgow's Silverburn out of town shopping centre is to get a 10,700 sqm extension which will include a 4,600 sqm 14 screen Cineworld cinema.
Hammerson and its joint venture partner, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), received planning permission for the £20m scheme earlier this year. In addition to the new cinema, the development will include nine new restaurants, Gala Bingo, additional retail and upgraded public realm.
Martin Plocica, Director (UK) Shopping Centres for Hammerson, said: "Pressing the button on delivering this leisure based scheme is great news for Silverburn. Anchored by Cineworld, the extension reinforces Silverburn's regional presence. We will be offering our customers an exciting line up of high quality leisure uses that complements perfectly our extensive, well-established fashion and lifestyle shopping."
Construction is expected to start before the end of the year with restaurants opening in Autumn 2014 and the cinema opening in Spring 2015.
Steve Wiener, CEO of Cine UK, added: "The centre attracts a significant number of cinema going consumers, who are drawn to the centre due to its quality, offer and location, none of which are matched by other locations in the region. We are looking forward to our opening night next autumn."
