A range of improvements and additions have been announced for the Brent Cross Cricklewood regeneration scheme by the development partners - Hammerson and Standard Life Investments.
The improved plans include a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the North Circular Road, a new network of covered streets and spaces in and around Brent Cross and earlier delivery of some of the transport improvements across the whole area.
The plans will now go on public display for feedback before being finalised and submitted to Barnet Council later this year as an amendment to the current outline planning permission granted in 2010.
James Stevens, Head of UK Development at Standard Life Investments, said: "Brent Cross has always been an economic powerhouse for North London and the Brent Cross Cricklewood regeneration will support 27,000 full-time jobs, 5,500 of these in retail and leisure, and lead to a huge boost for the area. It will also give local residents fantastic parks, new community facilities and much better transport connections across the whole area as well as great places to shop, relax, eat out and enjoy."
The existing centre will be fully refurbished to a world class standard with new stores, hotels, restaurants and leisure facilities created on the land of the current surface car parking, with all car parking moved into new multi-story car parks around the development.
The new bridge will lead directly into Brent Cross Main Square, to the Bus Station and the improved River Brent to the North, connecting right through to Clitterhouse Playing Fields and beyond in the South, via a new sequence of open spaces including a new Market Square. Visitors will be able to access an improved route to Brent Cross Underground Station or head to the new railway station to be created on the Midland Mainline.
Mike McGuinness, Development Director at Hammerson, said: : "These amendments will create a world class destination for shopping, dining and leisure as part of a new town centre for the area which will be delivered over the coming years.
"Tens of millions of pounds are also committed to transport improvements and we are proposing to bring forward many of these works into the first phase so that the whole regeneration plan can move forward."
The proposed changes will also see Hammerson and Standard Life Investments bring forward some of the planned transport improvements allowing Barnet Council to appoint a development partner to lead additional development to the South of the North Circular Road.
