In which European cities will working from home have the biggest impact?

The latest European Commercial Property Update from Capital Economics has predicted that the rise in people working from home will inevitably change cities as we know them.

However, the firm says that cities where a higher share of jobs can be done remotely are not necessarily the ones where the impact of remote working on the city’s real estate is likely to be the greatest.

Amy Wood at Capital Economics, said: “In this analysis, we focus on the city-wide impact, rather than how it might vary within the city. Across key European cities, the industry mix suggests that there are more jobs that can be done remotely in London and Paris.

“However, the link between the share of remote working and the impact on the city’s real estate is not one-for-one. Indeed, cities are not only made up of workers, but also other residents, tourists and students. And we expect tourism and student numbers to return to normal levels post-pandemic. As such, along with having a higher share of jobs that can be done from home, the impact of remote working is likely to be greater in cities where workers make up a higher share of the daytime population. Cities that stand out here include Munich, Prague and Hamburg.”
