Editor's Introduction January 2020

Richard Bowser comments

As we commence a new decade, I’ve already spoken at a number of property events this month where some attendees seem to expect the speakers to always reveal a simple ‘roadmap to riches’. As those who have previously heard me talk at events will already know, I’m not someone who will deliver overly optimistic messages to an audience or preach false doctrines.

Unfortunately that is not the case with some people whose agenda is to find joint venture (JV) funding partners for their property projects. Like many of you I’ve sat in some property events over the years listening to speakers whose promises of riches ahead are not then matched by reality. As we outlined in last month’s edition (December) it is not unusual for some property build projects to not go to plan and this can then result in fallouts between the ‘partners’.

There can be no guarantees of success with property projects but it’s always useful to learn from the experiences of others and so our first investor interview of 2020 on page 18 is with experienced investor Helen Chorley where she outlines her approach to working with property developers. For developers and investors alike, there are some invaluable ‘nuggets’ to consider in this article which may help you to avoid negative situations occurring ahead. I’ll also be doing an online Webinar with Helen in the next few weeks so keep an eye on your email inbox.
