The Curse of Japanese Knotweed

Property developer and landlord Phil Stewardson offers his thoughts

The impact of Japanese Knotweed or 'Fallopia Japonica' on a property can be huge; probably because we are in the height of summer and everything grows so fast. But on viewings lately I have definitely seen a huge increase in the number of properties affected.

Publicity and scare stories about Japanese Knotweed are increasing, and the size and rate of growth are incredible. If left untouched it's a real threat to structures and some mortgage lenders even refuse to lend on properties affected.

When we view properties that are affected, we are happy to take them on as long as it is away from the house itself and hasn't started to affect the foundations. Although it might take years to totally eradicate the problem, a remediation plan is simple to carry out and once the plan is in place with a contractor most lenders will accept this.
