Edinburghs Old Town facing redevelopment for first time since 1870

Plans are being put in place for a £180m scheme to redevelop the Old Town of Edinburgh, which will include a new street.

If the scheme is approved, Waverley Station will be revamped, while there will also be new offices, flats, a conference centre and a large new public square.

There are also plans for new shops, restaurants, cafes and the emergence of a new cultural quarter in Market Street near the City Art Centre and Fruitmarket Gallery.

The scheme could create over 2500 new jobs.

A spokesman for the proposed developers for the scheme, Mountgrange Capital said: "Our regeneration proposals offer a valuable opportunity to transform this part of Edinburghs Old Town for the benefit of the entire city."
